John 6:47-51

Hi everyone!

This Sunday will be reading together John 6:47-51.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

Jesus words are clearly referencing the events of Exodus 16 where the people of God “grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, ‘Would that we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.’”  Amazing that God had delivered them from 400 years of slavery, and yet they grumble about being in the wilderness.  But rather than God lashing out in anger toward them, which they clearly deserved, he graciously provides them with manna from heaven to eat.  Nevertheless, all the people who traveled from Egypt to Canaan eventually died and were buried.  What Jesus offers to the world and provides for his people is himself, the real bread from heaven, that will give us eternal life.  But this eternal life comes not from analyzing this bread from heaven, not from understanding this bread from heaven, not from dissecting or parsing or outlining this bread from heaven but comes from consuming this bread from heaven.  Eternal life, true life, joyful life comes from taking Christ into our lives, into our hearts, into our souls, and savoring him, enjoying him, and being wholly dependent upon him to nourish us, sustain us, and keep us.  I pray the Holy Spirit will cause you to have an insatiable hunger for Christ.  See you Sunday!

Blessings,
