Exodus 14:21-25
“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. And in the morning watch the LORD in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, ‘Let us flee from before Israel, for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians’” (Exodus 14:21-25).
The Israelites found themselves in the dessert with their backs against the wall—the Red Sea, a body of water that is 220 miles across—and their enemy rapidly approaching with chariots and spears. The prospects for survival seemed smaller and smaller with each passing moment. But as the passage tells us, the LORD fought for them and provided the way of escape through a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. But this event as it falls within the story of redemptive history is really the story of Jesus, and is a picture of what God would ultimately do for his people through the person and work of Christ. As we stood there—spiritually speaking—caught between sin and the Law, with no hope of survival, God did for us what we could never do for ourselves “by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us” (Rom 8:3-4). God, through Christ, provided a way for us to overcome death and sin and the law. That way is by faith alone in Christ alone for our salvation.
