Genesis 9:12-15

Hi friends!

This Sunday for our Creation to Consummation reading, which we will be reading together, we will be reading Genesis 9:12-15.

And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh."

In this passage we are told that God re-affirms the covenant that he had entered into with all of creation. In the six-day creation event God established a covenant between himself and creation (Jer. 33:20-22; cf. Gen 1:14-19). That is, he established a solemn agreement that he would preserve and sustain the creation along with its seasons and day and night. Thus, in the Noahic Covenant God is re-affirming the covenant with creation in order to bring about the promise of Genesis 3:15, that he would one day bring about a Remember to crush the head of the serpent and deliver God's people from their sins. God cannot fulfill the promise of Genesis 3:15 if he continues to destroy all of humanity. Hence, throughout the Old Testament the rainbow served as a reminder to God's people that God would not destroy all of creation again before bringing about the promise of the coming Messiah. Today the rainbow continues to remind remind God's people that God will not destroy all of creation until the promise of the coming Messiah has been fulfilled (2 Peter 3:1-10). See you Sunday!

Genesis 7:1-5

Hi friends,

For our congregational scripture reading this Sunday we will be reading Genesis 7:1-5.

“Then the LORD said to Noah, ‘Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate, and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate, and seven pairs of the birds of the heavens also, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth. For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.’ And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.”

This passage is a beautiful picture of God’s grace and mercy upon humanity. Despite the great wickedness of mankind, despite the fact that “every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (6:5), God chose not to destroy all humanity. He chose to remember and be faithful to the promise he made to Adam and Eve (Gen 3:15) that he would someday send a Redeemer to crush the head of the Serpent and deliver God’s people from the bondage of sin and death. This Sunday let us praise and worship God for his amazing and glorious grace!
